• born on april eighteenth, nineteen eighty-eight, catherine chastity mcgee is the first born child to robert and evelyn mcgee. she is born two months premature and is kept in the neonatal icu for nearly two months. a sick infant, young catherine stays up each and every night screaming. after several visits to the doctor, it is discovered that she is deaf in her left ear. this will cause speech delays later on in catherine's life.
  
• two years later, catherine's brother, shane, is born. he is a healthy, happy baby boy and the apple of robert mcgee's eye. from the moment he sees him, robert mcgee favors his son over his daughter. although this obvious favoritism causes strains in their future relationship, catherine never holds a grudge.
  
• the summer before catherine turns eleven, her parents relationship begins to break apart. their fighting begins to spiral out of control. robert mcgee begins verbally abusive lashing out at anyone in his line of sight; evelyn mcgee becomes extremely depressed, rarely wanting to leave the comfort of her own bedroom. for the sake of the children, evelyn sends the children to live with their grandmother for the year while she and robert figure things out.
  
• marilyn vodianova, shane and catherine's maternal grandmother, owns a lavish home in the east hamptons. she is a retired dancer with more time and money on her hands then she knows what to do with. she eagerly opens her house up to the children. during that summer, the nine year old shane spend most of his time out on the beach, searching for sea glass; whereas, catherine spent most of her time in the kitchen with her grandmother, learning how to cook. this is the year that catherine develops a passion and talent for cooking. she knows that one day she will be a chef.
  
• at the end of the school year, catherine and shane transfer back to school in boise. shane is eager to go back, but catherine takes some swaying. she begs to stay with her grandmother. her grandmother finally convinces her that her mother needs her more than she does. upon arrival in boise, the children discover that their parents are getting a divorce.
  
• after the divorce is finalized, catherine's mother refuses to get out of her depression. she indulges in poor hygiene, hoarding, horrible eating habits, and never leaving her own room. catherine becomes the mother figure that keeps the household together. her grandmother was correct; her mother needed her. caity is fourteen going on forty. she wakes up in the morning, gets ready, makes breakfast and coffee for herself and the family, and begins to wake up her mother and brother. this year and a half of running the household further gives opportunities for catherine is experiment with cooking. every meal was gourmet, although no one around her could appreciate it.
  
• during her high school years, catherine focuses on three things: grades, cultivating her cooking skills, and getting her mother out of the house. the first two were easy; catherine was naturally intelligent and cooking came easy. getting her mother out of the house was difficult. it was in her junior year that catherine's mother went out on a blind date with mr. nicholas griffith, a widower. evelyn originally didn't want to go out, planned on canceling the date, but at the last moment, cat convinced her otherwise. it was a good thing too, evelyn vodianova, formerly mcgee, hit it off with mr. nicholas griffith. within a year, the two were engaged to be married. evelyn and her kids move in with the griffiths.
  
• catherine chastity mcgee graduated salutatorian of her high school with plans to go to the chicago culinary institute, but at the last minute, her grandmother intervened. she told her that good friend of her's, and famous new york chef, has agreed to taking catherine up as an apprentice. it was a better opportunity than culinary school was. she would be learning just as much if not more during this apprenticeship. she would be taught by the best. catherine requested her academic deposit to the culinary institute back and used it to start her life in new york.
  
• things in new york were successful. catherine was trained under one of the best chefs in the business. while he was strict and crass, he was giving her valuable experience. catherine was grateful.
  
• one night at the restaurant, a packed night with nearly every seat filled, catherine debuted a new dish. it was controversial and odd. the dish was something that many people may not like, but her head chef believed in her. at one point in the night, someone requested to see the chef of that dish. catherine went out into the dining room with her head held high. the man who requested to see her was henry bauer, critic. catherine wasn't aware of this, so when mr. bauer, said something negative, catherine retorted. this brash behavior shocked mr. bauer, but intrigued him as well. mr. henry bauer wrote up a positive review about the fiesty, young chef and two weeks later, invited her out to dinner. the two were to start a passionate romance.
  
• henry bauer loved the culinary arts half as much as he loved to romance women. so when he and catherine began a relationship, it was going to be impossible for him to change his ways. he was a womanizer at heart. as soon as catherine found out about his cheating ways, she broke off the relationship. she had too much respect for herself. she had more important things to focus on, like her career.
  
• three months later, the classic symptoms began to set in: fatigue, nausea, heartburn, lack of menstrual cycles. for awhile, catherine denied the symptoms, but after a lunch date with her grandmother, she could no longer deny it. as soon as her grandmother laid eyes on her she said this "either you're overworked or pregnant, or both." before they were seated, catherine broke down crying. her grandmother wiped away her tears and began to sort the situation out. it was decided that catherine would take a break away from her work. her name was already established as a chef. she could come stay in the east hamptons with grandma marilyn, and relax, further sort things out. she would have time to think.
