SOPHIA BUSH . TWENTY THREE . JAMES' WIFE AND FINAL . MOTHER . CLOTHING DESIGNER . KIND . STUDIOUS , YET DARING .
IT WAS THE SPRING OF 2005 when james' mother was married to a man of money. he was eighteen years old then and had already grown accustomed to a life without luxury. so the all expense paid lifestyle was an absolute trip to the boy who used to do his homework at the bar, watching he mother roller skate to and fro at the local dinner. his step-father couldn't understand what a boy like james - well, a boy of james' age and looks - was doing at home every evening, with his head in a book. so, during the summer before his first year of college at cornell university, james was sent to stay in his step-fathers beach house in the hamptons for six weeks.
IT WAS THE SUMMER OF 2006 when he met the woman that would change his life forever. she was in new york for an internship for a fashion magazine, which worked her hard most week days and week nights. during the weekends, however, the hamptons was just a car ride away. she usually spent her weekends sun bathing and splashing about with some of the friends she'd made while in the city. one particular saturday afternoon, one of her over zealous friends dared her kiss a stranger. so she did. she picked the only man on the beach who could care less about the half dressed girls running around, hair wet and sticking to their shoulders and practically bare breasts. that boy was james', who may have been taken from his natural habitat, but was not breaking character. his head was buried in a paper back novel and he didn't notice this woman approaching until she plopped down in the sand beside him.
hi there, she said, and beamed in his direction. instantly, he was mesmerized. he lost his place on his page and found himself more interested in the dimples that wrapped around her mouth like paragraphs did a sentence. hi, he managed, his voice an octave or two lower than usual, just above a whisper. she continued to grin at him and just when he thought he couldn't take it any longer, he closed his eyes. that was when she leaned in, kissing him full on the mouth. he was drawn in, his lips dancing with hers instinctively, as if they'd met before. he heard the click of her phone taking a picture, but that didn't phase him. he would continue to kiss her until she stopped him. she didn't, though. her friends did, approaching after nearly an hour. they cheered and clapped and complained that she had proved she was daring and that they wanted to head back.
she smiled at james, didn't bother using words to explain or apologize or even introduce herself. instead, she stood up and brushed the sand from her legs. wait! can't i at least get your name? james had called to her and she beamed again. esther greenwood, she answered simply, and went on her way. james frowned and looked down to his copy of the bell jar in his lap. he was afraid he'd never see her again, so he looked up to call to her again, searching for an honest answer. she was already gone.
he sat at the same spot in the sand on the same beach every day, all day for a week. he was waiting for her to return, but she wouldn't for a few more weeks. see, the thing was, she had felt something when they kissed, and to a girl who suffered through her parents divorce at such a young age, she wasn't allowed to be in love. it would only hurt her. so she avoided the beach until her very last weekend in new york. he was still waiting for her. he proved himself loyal, at least. for that, he was rewarded. kit, she said, speaking down at him, before taking the seat beside him. katherine monet, but i prefer kit. james set his novel aside and offered her his hand. james rosenburg. those were the only words they exchanged that morning. their mouths were busy, but not with words. they were getting to know each other in a different way, letting their mouths reconnect, like a pair of old soul mates meeting in a new life. they kissed until the tide rolled in high and nearly washed his copy of the great gatsby out to sea.
they moved on from there, spending the afternoon together, and then the evening. they ate ice cream cones for lunch, drawing lines of the melting treat like war paint on one anothers cheeks and then licking it off. they walked all through the east hampton village, window shopping and talking. they talked about their favorite time of day, their favorite season, their favorite place. they talked about politics, what political party they preferred, who they would have voted for in elections past. they talked about their favorite writers and their favorite novels and their favorite characters. they talked about their pasts, being children. they talked about their futures, being adults. they talked about everything they could think of, eventually ending up on the second floor balcony of his step-fathers beach house. they continued to talk through the night, drinking glasses of rhode island iced tea. when the sun was coming up, they gave their mouths a treat. instead of talking, they kissed. kissing turned into touching, exploring one anothers bodies, studying, learning, remembering. james had always wondered what the difference between sex and making love was and he finally had his answer.
the two fell asleep when the sun rose above the water, right there on the balcony, half dressed, and didn't wake until the sun was at its noon position. she woke cursing and he woke to the sounds of her swears and her struggle with her clothing. not leaving me are you? he asked, not expecting her to say yes. i have to, she replied. he felt a definite pang of disappointment at those words. she glanced at the watch on her wrist. my train leaves in an hour and i still have to get back to my hotel and pack my things. she explained shortly, out of breath. she was yelling, cursing, complaining that she couldn't find her shirt. so he handed her his. she finally held still when she took it and met his gaze as he stood. this isn't the end, i promise.
she wrote her number and her address on the inside of his copy of the great gatsby and kissed him goodbye.
she went off to an all girls college in massachusettes, while he went off to cornell. they sent parcels back and forth, copies of books they were sure the other would like. he wrote her poems and letters and small chapters of a novel he hoped to finish by graduation. she quoted her favorite poets and lyricists and sent him sketches of clothing she was working to design. they spoke on the phone one night every week, talking and laughing and making each other listen to the sounds of their dormitories and the songs on the radio and songs that reminded them of each other. they were in love, accidentally, but neither would say so. neither dated, neither seemed interested in anyone else, though they each had others interested. they met every summer in the hamptons, during their breaks from college.
IT WAS THE SUMMER OF 2009 when they graduated from their separate universities and they met again in the hamptons. this time, james brought his parents along, and kit brought her father - who she lived with after the divorce. the two families got on rather well and james and kit were thrilled to be back together, having dinner with their families. that was when he proposed. her father gave his blessing, his parents did as well, and she said yes. they had discussed long ago that neither wanted a large wedding, so they married that weekend, on their beach with a justice of the peace and their parents to witness. the family beach house was a wedding present to the two, who made it a home. they were happy.
IT WAS THE WINTER OF 2009 WHEN kit found out she was pregnant, but the excitement and thrill ended at the end of february, when she miscarried and the doctor declared her incapable of carrying another child. the two mourned for awhile, but decided that at least they had each other, and besides, with her upcoming clothing line and his novel in the process of being published, it wasn't like they'd run out of things to do.
IT WAS THE SUMMER OF 2009 when kit's depression set in further and she ran out of muse to sketch. she took a break from her clothing line and started finding new creative outlets. it was late june when james surprised her with an interview with an adoptive representative. the two were thoroughly interviewed and their records checked and they were put on a waiting list for a baby. by sepetember, the two had been given a baby girl who lost her parents in the earthquake that had struck haiti.
