before you even begin to read, i'd like to provide you with two things. one: this is who we have in mind. two: this is our theme song. they meet in greece. lena is a sophomore and he's nearly graduating from the private academy they both attend. he's entirely reliant on his laurels, which is enough to allow him to go through - he's graduating just to say he's qualified, even though it's not a necessity because from his birth he's been shaped to run the large company his family owns. he asks her at a student-held party that neither of them want to be at why they're in school together if she's broke, and she's shocked that someone could be so candid and rude, and she tells him she doesn't know and stares at her toes and he kisses her and she's only fifteen, so they don't fuck even though she wants to. he leaves and she wonders about him.
they meet again on an academy field trip to budapest. he's there doing business for his company, he's nineteen and lena is sixteen and she strays from the group and she wakes up under a bridge alone, naked and all she remembers is the smell of the hand-rolled cigarettes he keeps in his coat pocket and the beautiful smile he gave her when she leaned her head against his shoulder on the walk to the canal.
she's graduating and she wonders if she'll see him in the crowd, in that strange way he has of showing up when she's feeling alone and lost. she hasn't told harlow about him, but she doesn't intend to - somethings must be kept secret, and the american friend of hers only knows that lena lost her chastity under a bridge. she looks into the sea of people and sees hector, proudly displaying his perfect, diplomatic smile from the second row, between two obese greek women waving their arm flab to and fro. she doesn't see him. she almost hadn't expected to. her chest is warm beneath the robes.
later, she goes for a walk in the cool evening air, long limbs still burning with the sensation of success. she sees him before he sees her, his tanned flesh pale white in the moon, dangling his legs in the water off of a dock. she puts her hand on his shoulder and they slide out of their clothes and into the water and in the morning a fisherman prods lena in the ribs and threatens to call her brother. he is gone. she can feel the tickle of his roughly spoken i love you on her throat. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - that's their history, pretty much. he doesn't have a name, yet, but his play-by is jon kortajarena and he's two years older then lena, which puts him at twenty three years old. he is greek, was born in greece and raised there, like lena, but his family is extremely wealthy and he's the heir to a hugggeeee shipping company that he now runs, which keeps him extremely busy (think stavros niarchos, but less ugly and less interested in paris hilton). when lena and the unnamed gentleman met, they were both in their private academy, and had seen each other around but no particular level of interest had been struck yet. he's kind of an asshole, so he asked her why she was in school with people of his league if she was so poor, and at that point in her life, she was a very shy individual. that part is explained, haha. and because he thinks she's cute when she's all blushing and fumbling for some kind of explanation, he kissed her. it didn't mean anything at that point. they don't really say anything else to each other after that and she wonders what that was all about, but never pushes it because she's lena and she wants more than anything to be accepted. of course, the affection from someone who could easily buy nearly the entire world was enough to make everyone hate her but we won't go into that. we'll just say that she wasn't necessarily popular in high school. of course, lena's not necessarily ugly (she is no dilapidated crack whore), so as she blossomed into the lady she is today, her personality sort of grew outwards with it and she became less introverted and shy and more the way she is now. on a field trip to budapest with the very expensive, very upper-echelon greek school she was attending, she runs into the gentleman once more. he pulls her away from the class and takes her to dinner and it's clear he's very interested in her and she's still a virgin, which he's also interested in, and he makes her feel older and sophisticated so she drinks the wine at dinner but doesn't eat much and ends up drunk and he tries to walk her back to the hotel but she refuses to leave the bridge they've crossed, and they both end up falling in (she doesn't remember this, the way she remembers it is written above), and he pulls her out and makes sure she doesn't get sick and then they fuck under the bridge in budapest while she's drunk and he's whatever. he's kind of callous and tough - which is necessity because of his running the family company and whatnot. he leaves before she wakes up. eventually, they fall in love, but the gap in their worlds makes it difficult to remain together and the last time she saw him was the night of her graduation. their relationship was never very traditional - they've only been together three times, total, in the whole five or so years they've known each other, but because of this their emotions are very pure. what i would like is for someone to take him up. he hasn't seen her since she was studious and intelligent and not constantly on drugs to make herself feel good, so i can't imagine he would be pleased with this change in her, but he was never very knowledgeable on her personality to begin with since their relationship thus far has been largely based on the instinctual and not much on the actual commitment part of the relationship. regardless, they are very much in love (although i can't imagine either has been faithful), and there's chemistry between them like no one's business. i don't have any specific way for them to meet in the hamptons in mind, except perhaps if hector, lena's brother, was interested in buying some of the shipping company (which he definitely would be), in which case lena would be the representative of her brother's company sent to arrange the meetings and whatever, and lo and behold they come face to face and fuck in the broom closet. but that's just a suggestion. anyway. if you're still with me after this much, you are a saint.
